The North East’s reputation as a world-class hub for energy and engineering continues to grow, and Quora Group is proud to have played a part in one of the region’s most exciting recent developments.
Subsea technology and services leader SMD has officially opened its new SMD Tech Works facility at Neptune Energy Park in Walker, Newcastle. Representing a £3 million investment, the 1,800sqm space is dedicated to underwater technology development and innovation. It stands as a testament to the North East’s position at the forefront of subsea engineering and clean energy solutions.
Quora Group was delighted to support the project, delivering the mechanical and electrical (M&E) installation in partnership with main contractor Brims Construction Limited and M&E consultants t2o engineers, on behalf of Shepherd Offshore Group.
Building the infrastructure for innovation
Our team’s scope of work covered a comprehensive mix of system upgrades and new installations, including:
- High and low voltage (HV & LV) systems
- Data networks and security infrastructure
- Lighting and power distribution
- Ventilation and comfort cooling
- Low temperature hot water (LTHW) systems
- Domestic services and sanitaryware
From design coordination to on-site delivery, our engineers worked closely with all project partners to ensure each phase was completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. Regular design and safety meetings helped maintain seamless communication, keeping the project firmly on schedule and within budget.
The result is a modern, fully equipped facility that enables SMD to continue developing pioneering subsea technologies. These are the same technologies helping to shape the global renewable energy and offshore industries.
Strengthening the Tyne Corridor’s energy future
Located within Shepherd Offshore’s Neptune Energy Park, a cornerstone of the Tyne’s industrial corridor, SMD Tech Works represents more than a new facility. It symbolises the North East’s ambition to lead the green energy revolution.
Speaking at the official opening, North East Mayor Kim McGuinness described the development as a catalyst for new, highly skilled jobs and a sign of the region’s growing influence in clean energy innovation. With SMD’s new site joining a network of facilities supporting over 4,000 local jobs, the project reinforces the North East’s role as a driving force behind the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
