Kepier Academy Durham
Kepier Academy Heating Replacement
In December 2021, we were honoured to be awarded a contract with Learning Matters Trust after a competitive tender exercise. The project entailed a significant heating system refurbishment programme for Kepier Academy, a renowned secondary school in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear. As the main contractor, our responsibility extended to providing a comprehensive site set-up, including welfare facilities, storage areas, and office space for our efficient Project Manager, John Christie.
Safety and preparation were our top priorities. Site Supervisor Nigel Stott ensured that all operatives thoroughly read and signed task-specific risk assessments and method statements. Additionally, each project team member received a comprehensive site induction, covering essential details such as night shift requirements, noise control, access points, egress points, delivery zones, and safe departure procedures to facilitate seamless school operations the following day.
The subsequent scope of works included various critical tasks to upgrade the heating system:
– Installation of a new heating distribution pipe network throughout the school.
– Replacement of existing radiators with new, high-efficiency fan convector heaters.
– Smooth system changeover upon installation.
– Installation of new BMS controls and electrical wiring for precise heating control, resulting in reduced energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint for the school.
– Completion of boxing, plastering, painting, and decorating to complement the core works.
– Comprehensive commissioning in accordance with the project’s specifications, along with thorough training provided to the school staff on operating and maintaining the new systems.
Maintaining strict adherence to our internal requirements, including those governed by our integrated management systems, enabled us to complete all works on time and with great attention to detail, ensuring a successful handover.
The project presented several challenges, which we met with ingenuity and thoroughness.
The first challenge involved conducting the works during term time. To minimise disruption to the school’s activities, we diligently executed night shifts for the project. This required careful coordination to ensure that the school operated smoothly the next day after each shift, with no tools or materials left behind.
The second challenge arose due to restricted access for quality control audits. The pipework passing through roof voids posed challenges for the client and consultant during their quality control audits and inspections. To address this, we employed our advanced Dashpivot software to document and photograph each completed task, producing quality sign-off sheets promptly shared with the client and consultant for seamless audits.
Our commitment to excellence and precise execution led to significant successes.
Firstly, we achieved timely completion and budget adherence. The project was completed on time and within the agreed budget, showcasing our efficiency and dedication to meeting deadlines.
Secondly, we achieved a handover with zero defects, demonstrating great attention to detail and ensuring a seamless transition to the upgraded heating system for Kepier Academy.
Lastly, the success of this project led to the awarding of further works for Learning Matters Trust, reflecting their satisfaction with our performance and results.
