Our Successful Delivery of the Sunderland Royal Hospital Decarbonisation Project Sunderland
Quora Group, we were delighted to be appointed as main contractor on an ambitious eight-month project as part of the major decarbonisation and upgrade of Sunderland Royal Hospital’s heating infrastructure. Our goal was to replace the existing steam heating and hot water network with an advanced low pressure hot water (LPHW) system. Despite encountering various challenges, our exceptional team, led by, Project Manager John Christie demonstrated our expertise and dedication, resulting in a seamless and successful delivery.
During the project, we faced several challenges, each of which we met with determination and efficiency. Early on, we discovered asbestos in the building service ducts, which was unforeseen. We promptly engaged our specialist subcontractor, to expertly remove the hazardous material and perform comprehensive four-stage clearance works, prioritising safety.
As the works involved installing a new 12” district heating mains around the perimeter of the hospital grounds many road closures were required to allow excavation of the ground and installation of the new mains. This was a complex task as the road infrastructure had to remain open to allow ambulances and patients to navigate around the hospital to the various departments that were all active during the works. Through planning was required to ensure the hospitals activities were not impacted upon.
Another critical challenge arose when transitioning from the existing steam system to the new LPHW system, demanding a significant site shutdown. We collaborated closely with the Trust’s estates director and estates team to secure a 12-hour night shift window for isolating, draining, and reconnecting a new 12″ district heating flow and return pipework. This intricate process demanded meticulous planning and stakeholder cooperation.
Our commitment to excellence and exceptional project management led to significant achievements. Overcoming challenges, we completed the project within the specified eight-month timeline, ensuring efficiency and minimal disruption.
We also upheld budget adherence through a proactive approach and diligent cost management, ensuring the project’s successful delivery well within the allocated budget. Throughout the project, we maintained uninterrupted hospital services, emphasising the utmost consideration for patient care and safety.
Furthermore, the project achieved an outstanding health and safety record, with zero incidents, showcasing our dedication to maintaining a safe working environment.
Our success was further facilitated by seamless collaboration and transparent communication. Led by, Project Manager John Christie, our team maintained close collaboration with the hospital’s dedicated project lead. Regular weekly progress meetings provided a platform for open communication and swift decision-making.
Utilising our bespoke project management software, we produced monthly progress reports and cost updates, keeping all stakeholders well-informed about the project’s status and budgetary performance.
